RUTF NOT FOR SALE WARNS MINISTRY

Secretary for Health Dr Samson Mndolo has condemned the selling and buying of Ready to Use Therapeutic Food – RUTF locally known as Chiponde.

Through a statement, released on Tuesday signed by Dr Mndolo, the Ministry has noted with concern that RUTF is being sold in shops and open markets saying this is illegal.

Dr. Mndolo said RUTF is a lifesaving commodity used in public and private health facilities to treat Malnutrition.

“The selling and buying of the RUTF which is labeled NOT FOR SALE is leading to a shortage of the commodity which is meant for vulnerable children in communities,” Mndolo said

“the practice poses a great health risk to consumers as they consume without a prescription by competent health workers” added Mndolo

YETU Community Radio understands through the statement that the Ministry of Health has pleaded with Malawi Police Services, Traditional Leaders, and Market Committees to check for perpetrators in their local areas.
