MHRC CALLS GOVERNMENT TO ACTION ON COST OF LIVING

Malawi Human Rights Commission-MHRC has expressed concerns over the unceasing hunger situation and the severe cost of living in the country.
According to a statement released and signed by MHRC Chairperson Chikondi Chijozi, the worsening socioeconomic situation has eroded the financial power of Malawians to afford basic needs.
Furthermore, MHRC said as a result of high inflation most Malawians are unable to pay for basic needs such as water, food, housing, transportation, medication, and electricity just to mention a few.
A recent report by the Center for Social Concern shows that household spending has increased, for instance as of July 2023, a household of six was spending K378,812 monthly representing an increase of K108,013 from K270,799 in June 2022

The commission has further expressed concern with reports that an estimated 4.4 million people are experiencing acute food insecurity in the country

The commission said it is saddened that people are surviving on wild tubers, unripen mangoes, and pawpaw fruits in some areas hence asking the government to fast-track the restructuring and operations of ADMARC.

“The government of Malawi should fast track the restructuring and operations of ADMARC to guarantee the availability of maize to vulnerable Malawians at an affordable price.”

Meanwhile, MHRC has asked the government to address the high inflation rate in the country to mitigate the high cost of living.
