MATOLA PRAISE EU FOR FINANCING MERA TWINNING PROJECT

Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola is optimistic that the 2.5 million Euro Grant support that the European Union has provided towards the launching of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority’s (MERA) twinning project, will help the country to move towards Vision 2063.
Matola made the remarks on Monday at the launch of the EU-MERA Twinning Program which has been designed to strengthen the institutional and technical capacity of the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) in the next two years.
The minister commended the EU for the support, saying the twinning program is timely as it has come at a time when MERA is realigning itself to the Malawi 2063 aspirations for modernization and industrialization of the economy with the energy sector playing a central role.
“Energy is life for any economy and regulating energy means regulating the Country’s economy, I am therefore very excited that we have this program in MERA and look forward to its fruits,” said Matola.
Meanwhile, Matola said he will champion the monitoring of this Project and his team at the Ministry will closely follow the progress of the program.
“On the part of Government, we expect this Twinning Program to support and enhance a regulatory system that ensures an effective energy sector operation and development that contributes to the achievement of Malawi’s political, social, and economic goals,” the minister said.
However, Matola assured investors in the energy sector, to expect this Twinning Program to create within MERA an environment that protects investors from undue influence, an environment that provides a fair and level playing field that promotes a transparent and consistent application of rules to enable investors get their fair share of returns on investment.
