IDLE BUS DEPOT, LOST OPPORTUNITY FOR RESIDENTS OF NTCHISI DISTRICT

Ntchisi district council in collaboration with the Malawi Human Rights Resource Center (MHRRC), has asked transport providers in Malomo to start using the Malomo bus station, saying it is sitting idle without being used for a long time.
Speaking during a meeting, where the council engaged key stakeholders involved in the issue Assistant accountant supervising local revenue at Ntchisi district council, Mayamiko Pingani said the council has been losing revenue because the bus depot is not being used.
Pingani said, the use of the bus terminal would help the council generate more income by collecting revenue from transporters who would be using it, as it was intended built for.
“The bus terminal would promote revenue collection which in turn will make the council have enough income to be used for different development projects in the district,” He said.
Pingani continued to say once transporters at Malomo start using the bus terminal, the area where they usually convene their business will become cleaner.
Concurring with Pingani MHRRC executive director Emma Kaliya said, this move will help lessen the council’s burden of over-depending on government funds which are inadequate to furnish all development projects in the district.
Kaliya said, MHRRC thought of coming in to help the council in this development to ensure that the council is gaining income that will enable it to develop the district.
“We expect that things are going to change going forward as people will now be using the bus depot as it was built instead of doing business on the sides of the road,” said Kaliya.
Meanwhile, Nkhotakota bus depot chairperson Zadoc Rajab commended the council and MHRRC for the development saying it will promote their business.
“Our businesses will grow as we will have all customers coming to the bus depot to get transport services,” he said.
