DPP CAUTIONS ITS MEMBERS ON MIREPRESANTATION OF FACTS

The opposition Democratic Progressive party, DPP has asked its members to avoid misrepresentation of the DPP constitution on eligibility of candidates to stand for elections.
In a statement signed by DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba, the judgment issued by the high court, nullifying the resolutions of the NGC meeting does not make other candidates ineligible for re-election.
On 29 September the High court nullified the resolution of the democratic progressive party, national governing council meeting held on 3 July, and ordered the party to hold its elective convention within 90 days.
Through the statement, DPP said it is currently governed by its constitution adopted at the national political conference in 2018, which provides that members of the NGC shall be elected for a period of five years, and are eligible for re-election for two more terms.
“article 10 (2) of the DPP constitution provides that members of the national governing council shall be elected at the national political conference for period of five years and shall continue to hold office until the election of new office bearers, “reads part of the statement.
The statement also says no members of the current national governing council including the president of the party Peter Arthur Mutharika, is disqualified from standing for re-election.
Meanwhile, the central executive committee of the party, resolved to apply for a stay of the judgement pending appeal to the supreme court of Malawi.
DPP said while it respects orders of the courts, it is also within its rights to appeal to the Malawi supreme court of Appeal.
