DOWA CHILDREN PARLIAMENTERIANS CALLS FOR IMPROVED EDUCATION STANDARDS
Children parliamentarians in Dowa District have expressed concerns about inadequate teaching and learning materials in some schools in the District.
Speaking in an interview with Yetu FM one of the parliamentarians Aisha Makelele said some schools have few books and teachers guide books and this has affected the provision of quality education in the District.
Furthermore, Makelele called upon the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to allocate adequate resources for procuring teaching and learning materials and distribute them in schools in Dowa district to address the challenge.
However, Makelele has asked her fellow children to take care of the few materials given to them to last longer.
Commenting on the matter Dowa District Commissioner Stallich Mwambiwa admitted that his office is aware of the challenge but he was quick to say that the funds they receive from the government are not enough to buy learning materials for all 254 schools in Dowa District.
“the fund we receive is k55 million to be used in buying learning materials for 254 schools in Dowa District and this is not enough to cover all the schools so we choose some of them,” he said.
Mwambiwa further said his office will continue to talk with relevant authorities in order to address the problem in the district.
Mwambiwa further commended the children from both the government and opposition sides for putting their differences aside and supporting the motion presented by the opposition hinting that this has portrayed good leadership.
On his part, Plan International Malawi Project Manager Lawrence Maulidi said the organization will put some strategies to address some of the challenges faced by Children based in Dzaleka Refugee Camp and Dowa district as a whole.
Meanwhile, Maulidi has challenged children in Dowa district to be champions of change and empowerment to other children by treating one another with dignity and working with integrity as they are leaders of tomorrow.
Dowa District Children’s Parliament commenced on 26 November to 27 November and was held under the theme “Without us nothing for us” and was funded by World Vision, When the Saints and Plan International Malawi, and UNHCR.
