President Lazarus Chakwera has expressed optimism that his trip to Germany is poised to boost the maritime infrastructure as investors have expressed interest in investing in water transport on Lake Malawi.

The president made the remarks in Germany, where he undertook several engagements in bolstering diplomatic, trade, and investment partnerships for Malawi.

Chakwera said his administration is keenly interested in revamping the water transport system saying it is aligned with the country’s drive to establish thriving secondary cities, some of which are located along the lakeshore.

“The discussions held in Germany, will support the country’s dream of turning Lake Malawi, into a catalyst of economic activity and growth,” said Chakwera.

The president said, under the investment plan, the revamp of the water transport system through infrastructure development and capacity building along the industrial value chain of shipping, port and cargo management, and hydraulic engineering…

The president met the German water transport delegation led by the Managing Director of Bayernhafen, the President of the Federal Association of Public Inland Ports, and Roberto Spranzi, a Board Member of the Germany Inland Shipping Transport Cooperative, among so many players.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of his official duty tour in Germany, Chakwera, said in pursuit of a consistent power supply for increased productivity, Malawi has signed a memorandum of understanding, facilitating the construction of a 50-megawatt solar farm to be located at Choma in Mzuzu.

“Together with other existing sources of power, this solar farm project fits perfectly into the country’s goal of adding 1000 megawatts to the national grid by 2025”, Chakwera said.

The deal was signed and sealed during a working dinner with Rethinking Africa Foundation, a German business initiative with a remodeled approach to promoting African development agenda for sustainable transformation.

“The investor – Sun Africa Power Development Limited is pumping in 70 million Euros for the 80-hectare solar farm which will employ over 100 Malawians during construction and a recurrent 80 at any given time for the next 25 years,” Chakwera said.
