26 DIE IN THE KASUNGU ROAD ACCIDENT
24 people including two children died on Thursday after a minibus hit and killed a cyclist before hitting a fuel tanker that was coming from the opposite direction at Katondo village in Kasungu.
Inspector Joseph Kachikho, spokesperson for Kasungu police told Yetu Community radio that the minibus, registration number MZ 11670, collided head-on with the fuel tanker and got burnt up killing all 26 people on board.
“23 out of the 26 bodies have been recognized by their family members and are ready for collection” He explained.
However, reacting on the matter Chairperson for the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi Coxley Kamange, urged minibus drivers to adhere to road traffic rules to avoid such accidents.
“Passengers are supposed to take responsibility for not boarding minibuses that have exceeded their capacity” Kamange added.
Furthermore, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs pledged to help the bereaved families with coffins and other assorted items.
Meanwhile, President Lazarus Chakwera and other political parties have sent condolences to all the bereaved families during the trying time.
